The mission of the TurboCASH Accounting Project is to help SMEs start and expand their businesses. We use accounting systems because they make business more efficient. Tradionally Accounting has been about statutory requirements. Of late governement all around the wolrd are relaxing their requirements for SMEs. For example here in South Africa, if you turnover is less than R 1 Million, you are not required to submit accounts, merely to keep a record of events. So keeping a formal set of books in an accounting package is actually a voluntary action. Thats the good news. So the bad news is that if you dont keep a tight set of books your business is not likely to go anywhere. Without clear records you will find Cash slipping out of your syytem. Debtors gogint unpaid and bills mounting. Studies show that there is an extraordinarily high correlation between business failure and not keeping records. But how can Accounting really help you? How can I go forward if I don’t know which way I’m Facing? Business is tricky and requires its directors to be quick witted and make lots of small but important daily decisions. This needs information. There is the funny analogy that running a company through a set of books is like driving a car down a windy road with all the windows blacked out ( use hands to show boxed in). A single plant requires very little to sustain it. But running a successful nursery operation with thousands and thousands of plants requires a sophisticated organization to nurture and sell their products while growing the business. Bluegrass Nursery in Shelbyville, Kentucky learned that as their company expanded, so did the demands of their customers and their own internal processes. “Bluegrass Nursery started in 1994 primarily servicing large volume merchandizers and grocery stores. At that time we were growing about 25 varieties of plants and only servicing about 10 stores. As the years progressed, we increased to 150 stores and the plant varieties increased to over 200 varieties.” Despite the hundreds of different plants they were selling, there were only a handful of unique prices. This meant it was difficult to precisely determine which particular varieties were popular and at what times of the year. “This large increase in volume created a need: identifying the plants that we were selling at what specific price points.
